Executive Investment Thesis
We maintain a cautiously bullish equity stance over the next two weeks, supported by improving equal-weight participation, accommodative financial conditions, resilient employment, and a favorable volatility term structure. Our tactical model scores 63/100, favoring continued upside drift toward higher S&P 500 levels. However, the 30-to-90-day outlook remains neutral at 54/100 as a 2.15% real Treasury yield, $91.85 oil, and a 28% modeled recession probability constrain the risk budget. We favor selective equity exposure, disciplined position sizing, and liquid hedges over indiscriminate risk-taking. Sustained yield pressure, widening credit spreads, or an abrupt volatility inversion would invalidate our constructive tactical thesis.
EXECUTIVE MACRO PULSE & EQUITY DIRECTION
Our active regime remains late-cycle fragility with bullish tactical momentum. The central investment question is not whether equities can advance in the near term, but whether liquidity and earnings resilience can sustain that advance while real yields and energy costs pressure financial conditions.
We distinguish between two investment horizons. Over the next 1–14 days, our tactical pulse scores 63/100, indicating a bullish bias. Over 30–90 days, our macro climate scores 54/100, indicating neutrality rather than a confirmed bearish turn. This divergence is deliberate: positive market internals and favorable volatility pricing can sustain equity momentum even as macroeconomic risks accumulate beneath the surface.
Three forces support the tactical case. First, the S&P 500 equal-weight ETF, RSP, gained 1.58%, exceeding SPY's 1.16% advance. Second, high-beta stocks are outperforming low-volatility equities, suggesting investors remain willing to accept risk. Third, spot VIX at 14.84 and a VIX/VIX3M ratio of 0.835 indicate that near-term volatility remains relatively subdued compared with longer-dated expectations.
The macroeconomic foundation remains resilient. Real GDP growth stands at 2.8%, unemployment is 4.1%, and initial jobless claims are 220,000. High-yield credit spreads at 318 basis points and a negative Chicago Fed National Financial Conditions Index of -0.52 are consistent with relatively fluid financing conditions.
Nevertheless, our 28% modeled recession probability is material, not incidental. The 10-year Treasury yield at 5.24%, the 10-year real yield at 2.15%, and WTI crude at $91.85 create a difficult combination for long-duration equity valuations. The market can continue advancing, but its margin for absorbing adverse surprises is narrowing.
Our directional conclusion: favor a measured equity overweight over the immediate tactical horizon when portfolio mandates permit, but maintain neutral-to-selective risk exposure over 90 days. We are constructive on price momentum, not unconditional about the macro regime.
S&P 500 (SPY) & TECH LEADERSHIP (QQQ) TRANSMISSION CHANNELS
The S&P 500 remains our principal tactical expression of the constructive regime. SPY trades at $778.57, with initial upside objectives at $785–$795 over the next one to two weeks, conditional on persistent breadth improvement and spot VIX remaining below 17.
sustained move above $795 would open a potential extension toward $800–$810. These are scenario-based technical levels rather than statistically calibrated forecasts, and we would require continued participation beyond the largest capitalization stocks to assign greater confidence to the extension.
On the downside, $770–$773 represents the first support zone. The $755–$760 region is the next material area to monitor. decisive break below $755, particularly when accompanied by widening credit spreads, would shift our tactical assessment toward a bearish posture. We would not treat an isolated intraday breach as sufficient evidence of a structural reversal without confirmation from credit and volatility indicators.
QQQ carries a more conditional outlook. Technology and other growth equities benefit from resilient earnings, but their valuation sensitivity to discount rates remains elevated. 2.15% 10-year real yield raises the opportunity cost of holding distant expected cash flows, while a firmer dollar and higher oil prices can tighten financial conditions further.
The 5.24% nominal 10-year Treasury yield is a meaningful competing return benchmark for capital allocators. The relevant valuation transmission operates through expected equity cash flows, the equity risk premium, and the discount rate applied to those cash flows. Without current earnings yields, forward valuation multiples, and an instrument-specific QQQ quote, we cannot responsibly quantify the implied equity risk premium or establish a precise QQQ target.
Our conditional framework is straightforward:
Bullish technology transmission: real yields stabilize or decline, earnings expectations remain resilient, and market breadth continues to improve.
Neutral transmission: nominal yields remain elevated but stable, allowing earnings growth to offset some valuation friction.
Bearish transmission: Treasury yields rise further, particularly toward or above 5.35%, while earnings expectations weaken or credit spreads widen.
We favor diversified equity participation over an indiscriminate concentration in long-duration growth stocks. Technology exposure remains justified, but its risk budget should reflect the possibility that sound corporate earnings coexist with multiple compression.
SYSTEMIC LIQUIDITY & THE REAL RATE SQUEEZE
Our reported net systemic liquidity measure stands at $6.08 trillion, calculated as Federal Reserve assets of $7.22 trillion less the Treasury General Account balance of $760 billion and overnight reverse repurchase balances of $380 billion. Bank reserves are $3.25 trillion, while money market fund assets total $6.48 trillion.
These figures indicate substantial financial-system liquidity, but their interpretation requires discipline. Net liquidity is a proprietary accounting measure, not a direct estimate of funds available for immediate equity purchases. Its market impact depends on the direction of Treasury cash balances, reserve demand, financing conditions, and the distribution of liquidity across institutions.
The Treasury General Account is especially important. sustained increase in Treasury cash holdings can withdraw reserves from the banking system, all else equal. Conversely, Treasury spending that reduces the TGA can support reserve availability. Changes in the overnight reverse repurchase facility also influence the relationship between Treasury issuance, money-market allocations, and bank reserves.
We therefore monitor the trajectory of these components rather than assuming that the headline $6.08 trillion figure guarantees continuing equity support. Our key downside threshold is net systemic liquidity below $5.90 trillion, particularly if the decline reflects sustained Treasury cash replenishment and coincides with tighter funding conditions.
Real yields represent the second transmission channel. At 2.15%, the 10-year real Treasury yield remains restrictive for assets whose valuations depend heavily on future cash flows. 2.40% breakeven inflation rate, combined with the nominal yield of 5.24%, reinforces the importance of distinguishing inflation compensation from the real return demanded by bond investors.
Oil at $91.85 introduces an additional complication. Persistent energy inflation could constrain the pace of monetary easing, pressure consumer purchasing power, and increase operating costs. The simultaneous rise in oil and the dollar is particularly important: if sustained, this combination could tighten financial conditions even without an immediate policy-rate increase.
We will upgrade the medium-term outlook if real yields decline below 1.75% while liquidity remains stable and credit spreads remain contained. Until then, liquidity is a supportive buffer, not immunity against valuation compression.
MARKET BREADTH & VOLATILITY TERM STRUCTURE
The strongest tactical confirmation comes from improving equity participation. RSP's 1.58% gain exceeded SPY's 1.16% advance, while the reported RSP/SPY ratio stands at 0.2736. The ratio's level is less informative than its direction and persistence; the daily relative-performance improvement of 0.42% is constructive, but one session does not establish a durable breadth regime.
High-beta versus low-volatility relative performance at 2.1370 also indicates a favorable near-term risk appetite. Small-cap relative performance, measured by IWM/SPY at 0.3583, requires additional confirmation before we characterize smaller companies as entering a sustained leadership phase.
Volatility pricing is similarly constructive. Spot VIX is 14.84, compared with VIX9D at 11.26 and VIX3M at 17.77. The VIX/VIX3M ratio of 0.835 indicates steep contango, generally consistent with lower near-term expected volatility than longer-dated volatility pricing.
However, the surface contains caution signals. The five-day put/call ratio is 0.748, SKEW is 154.34, and VVIX is 84.88. Investor sentiment remains defensive: the Fear & Greed Index is 45, while AAII bullish and bearish readings are 37% and 38%, respectively.
This combination suggests that investors are participating in the advance without displaying unambiguous enthusiasm. That can support a continuation rally, but elevated tail-risk pricing warns against assuming that low spot volatility eliminates downside exposure.
We will monitor three developments: persistent RSP outperformance, spot VIX remaining below 17, and the absence of a material increase in VVIX. sustained VIX/VIX3M ratio above 1.00, accompanied by VVIX above 110, would indicate a more consequential volatility deterioration than a routine pullback.
2-WEEK TO 90-DAY TACTICAL ASSET ALLOCATION MATRIX

These are relative positioning judgments, not prescribed allocations. Implementation should reflect each portfolio's liabilities, liquidity requirements, risk tolerance, benchmark, and existing exposures.
SCENARIO TRIGGERS & WHAT WOULD CHANGE OUR MIND
We distinguish between a tactical pullback and a structural deterioration. The latter requires confirmation across multiple independent channels.
Bearish reversal triggers
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
The real-yield and credit-spread trigger requires particular care: the real yield is already at the stated 2.15% reference level, but the combined bearish condition has not been satisfied because high-yield spreads remain below 400 basis points. further deterioration in labor conditions or a liquidity decline would reinforce the bearish case.
Expansive bullish triggers
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
Breadth is the closest to confirming a sustained upgrade, but the persistence condition remains essential. Low volatility alone does not justify unconditional risk-taking, and the real-rate threshold has not been reached.
Our tactical bearish reassessment would begin with a decisive SPY break below $755, especially if credit spreads widen and volatility moves into backwardation. Conversely, a sustained SPY advance above $795, broadening participation, and stable or declining real yields would strengthen the upside-continuation scenario. Neither price threshold should be interpreted in isolation.
BOTTOM LINE FOR PORTFOLIO ALLOCATORS & WEALTH MANAGERS
Our central case remains a cautiously bullish equity market over the next two weeks, transitioning into a more balanced risk environment over 30–90 days. The market retains support from resilient economic growth, favorable near-term volatility pricing, substantial measured systemic liquidity, and improving equal-weight participation.
Yet a 5.24% nominal Treasury yield, a 2.15% real yield, $91.85 oil, and a 28% recession probability impose meaningful constraints on forward returns. favorable tactical setup is not equivalent to a favorable risk-adjusted entry at every valuation.
We recommend five portfolio-management priorities:
Maintain measured equity exposure. Participate in the potential advance while avoiding leverage or concentration that depends on uninterrupted volatility compression.
Diversify equity leadership. Favor broad participation over exclusive reliance on mega-cap growth, while requiring confirmation before committing aggressively to small caps.
Manage duration sensitivity. Stress-test growth allocations against further Treasury yield increases and weaker earnings expectations.
Preserve liquidity and credit quality. Maintain capacity to rebalance if credit spreads widen, funding conditions deteriorate, or equities breach key support.
Use predefined scenario triggers. Review positioning when liquidity falls below $5.90 trillion, HY OAS exceeds 400 basis points, volatility enters sustained backwardation, or labor indicators materially deteriorate.
For fiduciaries, the objective is not to predict every short-term fluctuation. It is to participate in favorable price trends while preserving the capacity to respond when the underlying macroeconomic transmission changes.
Our final assessment: bullish tactical momentum, neutral medium-term macro conditions, and elevated sensitivity to real yields and energy inflation. We will favor selective participation over defensive capitulation, but we will not upgrade to unconditional risk-on until breadth, real-rate relief, and volatility conditions confirm a more durable expansion.
