The Beveridge Curve is a foundational graphical representation in labor economics showing the inverse relationship between the Job Openings Rate (Vacancy Rate, $V$) and the Unemployment Rate ($U$).

2. Soft Landing vs. Hard Landing Dynamics

The shape and positioning of the Beveridge Curve determine whether central bank monetary tightening will produce an economic "soft landing" or a steep recession:

  • Steep Portion of the Curve (Soft Landing): When labor demand is excessively elevated (such as post-pandemic 2022–2024), reducing job vacancies cools wage inflation without significantly increasing the unemployment rate.
